President John Dramani Mahama will this afternoon meet Professor Justice Date-Baah, Chairman of the University of Ghana Council, to discuss pertinent issues concerning university education in the country. He would also meet former Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Clifford Tagoe, and current Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, to deliberate on similar issues. Mr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations, announced these during the daily media briefings at the Flagstaff House, Kanda, on Thursday. Although the Deputy Minister did not disclose details of the meeting, he gave the hint that it would border on the improvement of infrastructure at the university. This is to ensure increase in the intake of students in the next academic year, considering the fact that two different batches of Senior High School (SHS) applicants were awaiting admission. Mr Mohammed explained that one batch pursued three years SHS and the other pursued four years SHS, and gave the assurance that the meetings would provide a road map for a permanent solution to any challenges. On the payments of arrears to members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Deputy Minister said GHC 25 million had been released and was expected to be credited to the accounts of members by Friday or early next week. Mr Mohammed appealed to the leadership of UTAG to exercise restraint, while Government tackled their financial challenges. In a related development, Mr Mohammed announced that President John Mahama would meet the Council of State on Friday. He also said the Vice President, Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, would leave Accra later in the day for the swearing-in ceremony of Hassan Rouhani of Iran, who won the country�s elections two months ago.
