Deputy Commissioner of Police Akuriba Yaagy, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, has urged political parties to impress on their followers to be calm after the Supreme Court ruling on the 2012 Election Petition to ensure peace.
Addressing a meeting of representatives of political parties and the leadership of the Local Council of Churches in Koforidua on Tuesday, Mr Yaagy urged them to demonstrate commitment to peace.
�Often times, party leaders profess peace, yet they look on when their followers foment trouble,� he said.
He therefore appealed to them to be alert and be firm since �despite the clarion call for peace, there are underground groups who would want to stir up trouble in the name of politics to derail peace.�
DCOP Yaagy said the petition before the Supreme Court was legitimate since the constitution allowed that and therefore it was important that all minds were clear on it to avoid confusion and all other untoward events.
The Deputy Eastern Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Police Abass Abaah, said he was not happy with the absence of some key political party representatives and that such meetings were necessary and should not be taken for granted.
He appealed to political party leaders in the region to show commitment at efforts to maintain the peace and tranquility in the country.
