A Brazilian mechanic has devised a way to illuminate his house during the day sans electricity - using nothing more than plastic bottles that are filled with water and a tiny bit of bleach.
In the last two years, Alfredo Moser's innovation has spread throughout the world and is expected to reach one million homes by early next year.
Moser said that his ideas is simple and works by the principal of simple refraction of sunlight, as he fills an empty two-litre plastic bottle, the BBC reported.
He said that two capfuls of bleach should be added in the bottle to protect the water so it doesn't turn green [with algae], as cleaner the bottle, the better.
To install his bottles, Moser drills a hole in a roof tile, then, from bottom upwards, he pushes the bottle into the newly-made hole and fixes it at the place with polyester resin.
The inspiration behind the light bulb was his boss, who once during the country's numerous electricity blackouts in 2002, suggested getting a discarded plastic bottle, filling it with water and using it as a lens to focus the sun's rays on dry grass to start a fire, as a signal to rescuers during emergency situation.
