Nyaho Should Know Better Sammy Awuku

Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku has rubbished calls by Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe seeking the resignation of the partys General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie. Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Awuku said, Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe should know better because, if somebody wants to remove a General Secretary from office, there are laid down procedures and rules enshrined in our partys constitution that should be followed. He also explained that the partys constitution "does not state that the case should start from the airwaves therefore going on radio and saying the General Secretary should resign, is neither here nor there. Mr Tamakloe called for the resignation of the party's General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, a day after the Supreme Court slapped a GHC 5, 000 fine on him for criminal contempt. This according to him had brought the name of the biggest opposition party into disrepute. In a sharp rebuttal however, Mr. Awuku said: the party [was] not considering putting any pressure on the General Secretary of the party to resign because the Supreme Court had already punished him. He indicated that, once the Supreme Court had punished and fined him for that particular offence, the matter [was] done with and the party is moving on beyond that. In his opinion, this kind of contempt does not debar somebody from contesting for a public office, but if a person is convicted on grounds of first degree felony, on grounds of murder, on grounds of rape and other serious crimes, that is when it debars the person from contesting for public office, not for criminal contempt" Meanwhile, a political scientist and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has backed calls for the General Secretary of the NPP to resign. According to him, if it were a low rank member of the party, it would not have been a problem but as the General Secretary of a party, we expect him to be a gentleman, a unifier and not somebody who will want to seek violence, who will want to seek divisions. He called on Mr. Afriyie to resign because, his situation was more humiliating to the party than that of Dr. Wereko Brobbey.
