Deputy Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor has told the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament that the Electricity Company of Ghana- ECG has in recent years made significant progress in ensuring that consumers pay for electricity they use and also recoup debt owed them by some organizations and state institutions. He said the phasing out of postpaid meters and replacing them with prepaid meters especially in Ministries, Departments and Agencies has accounted for the improvement in revenue collection by the electricity company in recent times. "We have currently supplied over 2000 prepaid meters to Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ensure that these agencies do not accrue huge debts which turns to cripple the activities of the utility companies." Hon John Jinapor further urged Members of Parliament on the Committee to support in the Ministry by explaining to their constituents the criteria used by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in adding communities to the national grid, he further explained stated that for a community to qualify under the programe, it has to have a population of 500 or more, �this explains why sometimes skip some communities in the process� he added. Hon Jinapor assured the Public Accounts Committee and Ghanaians in general of government�s measures to seal loopholes and ensure revenue losses to the country are curbed as well as improve service reliability to the Ghanaian populace.
