Pay GH700,000.00 Debt To CWSA Minister

Mr Eric Opoku, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has called on district assemblies in the region to pay a total of GH700,000.00 owed to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency. This represents the counterpart funding arrangement entered into between the assemblies, communities and the agency for construction of water and sanitation facilities in selected communities. The failure to honour their part of the agreement is said to have become a source of displeasure to the African Development Bank (AfDB), sponsors of the projects. Mr Opoku said the attitude of the assemblies was sending a bad signal and the region could be the loser as this could scupper future sponsorship plans. He said this when addressing the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) meeting in Kumasi on Wednesday. The meeting brought together district chief executives, presiding members, service commanders, regional heads of department and agencies and chiefs to discuss the effective implementation of development programmes. Mr Opoku said he was currently in talks with the Agency to persuade them to sink more boreholes in a number of communities and expressed the fear that the effort could be scuttled unless they acted quickly to settle the indebtedness. He underlined the need for the assemblies to place more emphasis on environmental sanitation and directed that they all submitted their action plans to RCC. The Regional Minister also spoke about the tremendous efforts they were making to fight poverty and promote human resource development. Earlier, 40 computers and 16 scanners, received by the RCC from the Communications Ministry were presented to some selected health institutions. Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) received 25 computers and 10 of the scanners.
