Taxi Drivers Demonstrate At Peace FM (PHOTOS)

Irate taxi drivers on Tuesday demonstrated in protest against new by-laws being implemented by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Tema Metropolitan Assembly, (TMA), Ga West, Ga East and other Assemblies. The taxi drivers who gathered in front of the premises of PEACE FM, said there are no jobs in the country; and so we dont understand why they want to deprive us of this one too. According to them the AMA and the other Assemblies are demanding that they join Drivers Union at the various taxi stations so that they will be easily identified. With this, taxi drivers who are known as floating drivers, will have to stop floating and join a particular station. This also means that they cannot operate in other territories apart from the one they belong to. and that is our problem because before you join a union, you are being asked to pay GHC300 where are we going to get that money? We have obeyed every instruction and regulations but as for this one, we will not accept it. They should allow us to do our work in peace one of the drivers indicated. The protest however turned violent as some of the taxi drivers decided to block the road. The police, however stepped in to maintain calm. Efforts to reach authorities of the AMA for their reaction have proved futile.
