Level Of Tariff Increase Outrageous - TUC Tells Govt & PURC

The Trade Union Congress has implored government and the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) to revise the tariff increases or else face their wrath. General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, Kofi Asamoah explained the position of his outfit urging government and the PURC to adopt a gradual process to impose new tariff percentages on electricity and water services in the country. According to him, the TUC may be compelled to refuse to accept any negotiations by government regarding the payment of their salaries should there not be any possible downward review in the current tariff hikes. Speaking to Radio Gold on Wednesday, he noted that the "the level of increase as announced is quite outrageous and particularly when it relates to the income levels of the ordinary personWhy didnt they do it since 2010? Assuming that that principle is justified, if they were to have doing 20% or less than that for every year since 2010; we couldnt have gone to this whole huge 80%. To him, the tariffs should have been increased gradually each year in order to have avoided the astronomical changes in the current electricity and water tariffs. He therefore appealed to the major stakeholders in the energy sector and government to "find a way in reducing the levels now and perhaps, look at what could be paid. How do we reach the same 80 percent within a range of time? Otherwise, were going to be compelled to refuse to understand any other government or employer when it comes to the matter of negotiating salary.
