Ghanaians who usually commute to work or any other destination via cab or taxi means, are likely to be disappointed and might be compelled to find another mode of transportation following reports that they (Taxi drivers) will not operate on Monday.
Taxi drivers in the capital are unhappy with new by-laws introduced by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), which is coercing them to join unions against their will.
On Tuesday morning, the taxi drivers surprised workers of Peace FM, Okay FM, Neat FM and U-TV when they gathered in front of �Ship House� to express their unwillingness to join the groups.
Speaking to Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM, one of the taxi drivers, Kwesi Prempeh said the AMA is taking them for granted in the metropolis; �collecting monies every day, and we don�t even know what they use the monies for. I don�t know why he is doing that. Probably he thinks because we are not educated, he can treat us anyway he likes��
He said indicated that the taxi drivers have decided to take their protest further by not working on Monday, adding; �it is about time they take us serious�
Meanwhile, the AMA has maintained that its demand for taxi drivers to join unions is consistent with Legislative Instrument (LI) 2180 (2012), which regulates the operations of commercial vehicles under the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs).
AMA Boss, Oko Vanderpuije, says the reforms introduced are geared towards improving the quality and safety of commuters.
