The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has directed its members not to accept any form of redeployment from the Ghana Education Service (GES).
This is because, in their estimation, the directive of the GES lacks the appropriate guidelines for effective implementation.
�NAGRAT is indicating that we will not accept this type of haphazard situation and we have instructed all our members that, as far as we are concerned, the Ghana Education Service has not given us the modalities of redeployment and rationalizing,� the President of NAGRAT Angel Kabonu said.
The redeployment of teachers across the country has become necessary following the conversion of the four-year SHS system to three years.
But defending the stance of NAGRAT, the President of NAGRAT, Angel Kabonu on Citi Eyewitness News described the ongoing redeployment exercise as �an unfortunate development on the education front.�
According to him, the modalities for which these teachers have been released are not known and have not been stated.
�In fact as I speak, I have on my desk about 17 letters issued by heads of schools releasing teachers under what we call open release. The teachers have not been released specifically to any educational institution. The modalities for which those teachers are being released from the schools are not known� he said.
He also revealed that some female teachers in the Ashanti Region who went on maternity leave have been asked to leave their schools adding that because the GES has not laid down any clear directive or conditions under which people can stay or leave, these teachers cannot return to the schools.
Mr. Kabonu also believes that the exercise of redeploying teachers is a way of reducing the state�s high wage bill.
�We have just gotten information that what is being done is a directive from the Ministry of Finance because the Ministry of Finance thinks that the education budget is so huge and that they have placed ban on employment in the GES. So they should turn around the teachers they have in the service without employing anyone,� he said.
He revealed that the final decision of the council would be made known to the general public by the close of this week if nothing is done about the directive from the GES.
