Mr Sampson Gyatto, New Juaben Municipal Finance Officer, has advised the general public to demand receipt for any payment made in respect of tax or levy to any revenue collector to help improve public financial management.
Mr Gyatto told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that when receipts were not demanded, it was easy for public funds to be diverted into people�s pockets.
He said public financial management required the active involvement of all stakeholders and one of the surest ways to be involved �is to demand receipt for any payment you make�.
He said the New Juaben Assembly had put stringent measures in place to check corruption.
Mr Gyatto said the assembly had privatised part of its revenue collection such as property rates, operational and artisan�s fees, market tolls and rents which were yielding maximum results.
He said the private firm doing the revenue collection on its behalf was using a technology that required that every revenue collector rendered accounts daily before the machine could be used for any transaction.
That, he said, made it difficult for revenue collected to be diverted adding that the assembly had also entered into an agreement with the company to pay the moneys collected into their accounts daily.
Again, he said, the assembly had assigned National Service Persons to supervise revenue collectors to ensure that all monies were accounted for.
Mr Gyatto said with those measures the assembly�s Internally Generated Fund was on course and that 74 percent of its target had been met as at August 2013.
On the issue of property rate, he said its collection was difficult because people did not understand why they should pay for their own property.
