The Trade Union Congress (TUC) says it plans to maintain its 10�day ultimatum given to government to review recently announced utility tariffs. This is despite an appeal from President Mahama to reconsider their decision while government addresses the issue. The TUC at a press conference last week Tuesday issued a 10-day ultimatum to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and government to cut utility tariffs by or face a nationwide strike since the percentage increment is very high for the ordinary Ghanaian and also for failing to implement a systematic tariff increase agreed three years ago. President Mahama announced the establishment of a technical committee to review the new tariffs at the launch of the Policy Fair on Wednesday. But although the TUC has agreed to serve on the committee, the Secretary General Kofi Asamoah in an interview with Citi News stated that the union would still stick to the deadline date. �Much as we spoke about it, the meeting agreed in principal that we should participate in the technical working group but we should not withdraw or amend the ultimatum,� he said.
