Girl, 13,Commits Suicide At Effiakuma

A 13-year-old primary six pupil on Friday committed suicide at Effiakuma near Takoradi in the Western Region. Residents of Effiakuma were thrown into a state of shock when news broke that the 13-year-old pupil of Azeera Islamic School in the area, Salamatu Yakubu had committed suicide with a nylon rope. Daily Guide gathered that the body of the deceased was found hanging in an uncompleted building close to her house. ASP Olivia Ewubena Adiku, Western Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), confirmed the tragic incident to Daily Guide yesterday. She indicated that the body of the 13-year-old girl had been deposited at the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital, Sekondi pending an autopsy. The Police PRO explained that the deceased was staying with the parents in Huni Valley near Tarkwa in the Prestea Huni-Valley District and moved to the metropolis early this year to stay with the aunt in the same compound with other siblings. She continued that the little girl was said to have shown no signs of depression or exhibited any suicidal mannerism prior to the unfortunate incident. ASP Olivia Adiku explained that when the girl woke up yesterday morning, she headed towards the direction of an uncompleted structure opposite the house for no apparent reason. She said the deceased was keeping long in returning, so the siblings thought she was attending to the call of nature. According to the Police PRO, the family was alerted by a passer-by who was walking near the uncompleted building and saw the girl hanging in the building. He raised an alarm which attracted a large crowd in the scene. ASP Olivia Adiku pointed out that the police were investigating what led to Salamatu�s decision to take her life.
