A former President, John Agyekum Kufuor, has been conferred with honorary doctorate degree by the University of Edinburgh at the Talbot Rice Gallery at the Old College along with five other distinguished personalities. He was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters for his contribution to international development. Four of the other five honourees are fellow Commissioners of the Global Citizenship Commission under the Chairmanship of Sir Gordon Brown, former British Prime Minister. They are Professors Appiah and Waldron as well as Professor Derek Curtis Bok, two-time President of Harvard University in the USA and Professor Emma Georgina Rothschild, Professor of History at Harvard University. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Global Citizenship Commission at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, Mr Kufuor called for the reform of the United Nations Security Council to reflect the geopolitical conditions of the times. He said another look should be taken at the veto power wielded by some permanent members which they used to forestall actions they disagreed with, even if the majority favoured it.
