Give Unsuccessful BECE Candidates Second Chance - Minister

The Minister in charge of the Trinity Congregation of the Presbyterian Church, Koforidua, has called on government to make it possible for students who do not pass the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to re-sit. The Reverend Ransford Kwabena Awuku Gyampoh quoted Nelson Mandela as saying: Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Speaking to Ghana News Agency in an interview he expressed sadness that some BECE candidates do not get the chance into the Senior High School because they simply could not make it in their exams. Rev Awuku-Gyampoh said BECE candidates outweigh the total population of students, explaining that for five years the junior high schools make less than 15 per cent pass in the exams He asked: "Can we continue to breed more street children?" Rev Awuku-Gyampoh said if it possible for senior high school students graduates to re-sit some papers then it should be possible for BECE candidates to re-write their exams and attain higher levels of education. "Undoubtedly, to re-sit BECE papers may have its own challenges but, I still stand to say that if education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army, then, the unsuccessful BECE candidates should be given a second chance."
