3 Witches Rescued

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service has rescued three women who have been subjected to various forms of physical torture of a week on suspicion that they are witches. Maria Issah, Abibata Musah and Samata Alhassan were reported to have been accused by one Kande Ali, a teacher, of bewitching her leading to their being summoned before the Yapalsi Naa. They were later whisked to the Sagnarigu Chiefs Palace guards to admit they were, indeed, witches tormenting their accuser and other victims and residents. According to Police, Kande Ali, at the center of the entire controversy, claimed she had been seeing the three in her dreams at midnight. These dreams, she maintained, coincided with a time she suffered a strange attacking which she failed to disclose to the police. After experiencing these strange attacks, she was compelled to confront Abibata Musah and claimed the latter admitted the three of them were behind her sickness and were trying to kill her. She therefore reported them to the Yapalsi Chief who in turn took the accused persons to Sagnarigu, another suburb of the Tamale Metropolis, where this inhumane treatment was meted out to them while being illegally confined. Their relations, who did not understand why the chief of Sagarigu looked up the poor women for more than a week without trial, reported the matter to CHRAJ which collaborate with the police and intervened. A team of policemen who went to the palace to rescue the women were initially prevented by palace guards until reinforcement was deployed. They set the captives free after breaking the locks of the door to the said cell. Police currently investigating the matter disclosed to Daily Guide that those found culpable would be arraigned before court for trampling on the rights of the three poor women who have since reunited with their families. Meanwhile, police are yet to invite the chief of Sagnariagu and Yapalsi Naa on the matter as they claimed the accused persons were detained for their own safety.
