Uruguay Captain Accuses Nigeria Of Using 35-Year-Olds At The FIFA U17 World Cup

Uruguay players at the U17 World Cup have launched an astonishing attack at Nigeria accusing the West Africans of fielding 35-year-olds at the ongoing junior competition in the United Arab Emirates. The captain of the South American side made the accusation on Saturday night after losing their quarter-final 2-0 to Nigeria. At the final whistle of their defeat by Nigeria, the Uruguay players collapsed to the ground in anguish as if bereaved. Through mumbled voices and tears they insisted that they had done all they could and regretted not having taken advantage of their opportunities. But the captain of Uruguay Fabrizio Buschiazzo reserved the blame on their defeat on the age of the Flying Eaglets, an accusation even Ghana made during the qualifiers. The controversy about overage Africans was the theme for the Uruguayan defender, who said: I am very angry to think that Nigeria are not 17. We are a under-17 team and are better than any other under-17s but but not against 35 and 40-year-olds which is how the Nigerians appeared to be to me. However, he added: This is not an excuse . . . but it is clear that they dont have the age to play. Nigeria are through to the semi-final with Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan tipping the Flying Eaglets for the title. The Golden Eaglets have got a step closer to clinching their fourth Fifa Under-17 World Cup title after beating Uruguay 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Taiwo Awoniyi, to advance to the semi-finals of the competition. The Golden Eaglets look set to face Sweden in the semi-finals.
