Korle-Bu Woes Deepen

The woes of the nations premier hospital, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have been aggravated with a legal suit filed against a board member of the hospital, Godfred Ahianyo by a Metro TV Journalist, Henry Nii Addo for allegedly taking allowances not commensurate to his status as a senior director of the hospital. The Metro TV Reporter sued the Board Member of the hospital for receiving full time benefits for chairing a three-member committee tasked to restructure the hospital. According to the statement of claim, the defendant, Mr. Ahianyo, is a Board Member of the hospital and chairman of a three member committee assigned to embark on restructuring and auditing of the hospital. The statement noted that strangely, the hospital is treating Mr. Ahianyo by virtue of this responsibility, as a full time staff with all manner of payments as follows: assignment of full time duty vehicle, duty post accommodation and a monthly telephone credit of GH60.00. Other benefits are monthly allowance of GH2,900.00 and all benefits t hat a senior directing staff of the hospital enjoys on top of all his regular allowances as member of the Board of Directors. It further stated that as much as the Board of Directors have the right in discharging their mandate to restructure the operations of the hospital, it is manifestly wrong for the chairman of the restructuring committee to assume the status of a full time staff. The plaintiff is, therefore, praying the court to declare that according to all principles of good conscience and natural justice, it is wrong and unfair for the Board to appoint a chairman of a restructuring committee and treat him as a full time staff with several illegal allowances. Mr. Addo is also praying the court to order that all allowances and or monies paid apart from his regular Board Member entitlements being funded to the hospital.
