The President of the National Farmers and Fishermen Award Winners Association of Ghana, Philip Abayori says unless government prioritizes irrigation increase in agriculture, production will be a mirage. Speaking to Radio Ghana ahead of this year's Farmers and Fishers Awards Day, Mr Abayori said the total land space under irrigation now is not enough for the nation to scale up food production. Mr Abayori also touched on the availability and access to fund and loans as another important challenge which must be addressed. On marketing, Mr Abayori said farmers would have to control their own sales. He suggested private sector participation in transportation and establishment of farmer�s sales centres using the weighing scale. Meanwhile, President John Mahama says government is determined to maintain the quality of the Ghanaian cocoa and increase production to move it to the number one position on the world market. President Mahama said this when he joined Cocoa Processing Company Cargill's 5th anniversary at the Tema Free Zones Enclave in Tema near Accra. He said government will continue to encourage the Private sector to add value to the country's major export commodities. President Mahama and former President Kufuor unveiled the anniversary plaque.
