Kumasi: Police Shoot Police Accidentally

Lance Corporal Kwabena Yaw of the Asokwa Police Division is on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi after a colleague police officer mistakenly shot his hand while in the process of trying to maim a suspect who was escaping arrest. The policeman-shoot-policeman incident rather resulted in the escape of the suspect, who was said to have attempted to snatch a car from its owner. Sources at the Asokwa Police Station in Kumasi who confirmed this incident yesterday explained that the shooting happened last Sunday evening. According to the sources, a team of policemen were detailed to an accident scene at the Santasi Roundabout at about 7pm last Sunday. While on their way, they saw a mob chasing a suspect who they claimed had attempted to snatch a car from a driver. Some of the policemen therefore chased the alleged car snatcher to a point where Lance Corporal Kwabena Yaw was said to have grabbed the suspect. The suspect allegedly struggled with the policeman trying to free himself. It was in that process that another policeman, Constable Boateng, tried to shoot the legs of the suspect to over-power him but ended up shooting the hand of his colleague with his AK47 rifle. The sources said Lance Corporal Kwabena Yaw was scheduled to do an operation on the injured hand yesterday and that he was in a stable condition. Meanwhile, they said with the shooting of the policeman, all attention went on the policeman and that gave room for the suspect to escape while attempts were made to rush their colleague to the hospital.
