Ghanaians Must Resist Sale Of Achimota Forest Reserve

Manager of the Legon Botanical Gardens, Kofi Boakye-Yiadom is calling on Ghanaians to resist the sale of the Achimota forest reserve by some individuals within government adding that he will play his part by going to court to stop the sale. If government sales the land, I will go to court and seek a court declaration as to whether the Owoos family are the only people that are entitled to compensation, he said. His comments come in the wake of media publication that the Achimota forest reserve is going to be sold to some foreigners for it to be used as a recreational park. According to Mr. Boakye-Yiadom, some officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration are frantically racing to reverse some portion of the Forest to the Owoo Family who are claimants to the Forest Reserve before proceeding to convert it into a commercial center. Speaking to Citi News Mr. Boakye-Yiadom who described the sale of the forest reserve as theft and rape of another national resource and the citys green pride, called on the generality of Ghanaians to rise up against the sale of the Achimota forest just as they did in October 2008 when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration tried to sell it. He said: to me it is one of the most dangerous decisions that any technical person who is green minded would want to make, because Achimota forest is just about the only green belt in the heart of Accra and now we talk about climate change and the depletion of the ozone layer. He also questioned why anybody would want to just cut off all this green away when we have concrete all over the places in the city now...it is a bad decision, I dont think it is correct. According to him, there is a need for a proper planning of the city instead of the indiscriminate erection of structures everywhere.
