Some army veterans in the Ashanti region say they regret sacrificing for Ghana. The Second World War survivors, some of who are bed-ridden, accuse government and society of neglect. Ahead of Remembrance Day also known as Poppy Day on Monday November 11th 2013, to honour of those who lost their lives in the war, the veterans clam their only source of income is the symbolic artificial poppies sold by the Veteran Association of Ghana to support members� welfare. The Day is observed in memory of those who lost their lives in the two world wars and in conflicts around the world. In an interview with Joy News� Erastus Asare Donkor, Chairman of the Manhyia district of the Veterans Association in Kumasi, ex Sergeant Sylvester Kenneth Agyei Duah said he has regretted joining the army. �When they bring you back, you are a hero but in reality you don�t feel it. If I had known this was going to happen to me, I would not have joined the army to defend my country men and women,� he lamented. Ex Sergeant Agyei Duah described as worrying how the old and weak veterans especially at the Legion Village at Manhyia struggle for food, accommodation and healthcare. He called on government to pay more attention to the country�s heroes.
