Government's Decision To Absorb Cost Subsidies Might Create Problems - ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says the governments decision to absorb the cost of subsidies could create some problems should there be a delay in the payment. Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Manager of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Dan Adjei Larbi noted that the timing of payment will affect us. If it comes early it will affect us positively, if it comes late, it will affect us negatively. Government has taken on board the 25 per cent so we see it as a subsidy which means that at the end of the month, we will send the difference to government to pay. In a communiqu signed by the Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the reduction was effected after government consulted with some stakeholders and reviewed the report of the technical working group. The statement stated that since the PURC has already gazetted the 78.9% increase in the electricity tariff, 9Government will absorb the difference between the gazetted increase of 78.9% and the 59.18% (including all levies and charges) as agreed with the social partners. Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have expressed their delight about the decision by government to reduce electricity tariff from 78.8 percent to 59.18 percent. One gentleman said it is good for the government to reduce tariffs because these days, the system is very very hot and if electricity tariff is expensive some can afford, some cannot afford. We are not all equal. Another lady described the decision as a good initiative taken by government, adding that the decision will help customers solve one or two problems. It is very good for government to have reduced electricity tariff because it will help us use the extra money for something else so I think the reduction is important, another person said.
