�My bid to become the chief scribe of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is to redeem the party from its recent defeats at the polls,� Mr Kwabena Adjei Agyepong, a General Secretary aspirant of the party has said.
The former presidential spokesperson in the Kufuor administration, who is currently meeting with the NPP regional executives and elders as part of series of consultations has, therefore, enjoined party executives and supporters to have faith in him and offer him their full support during congress,� with an assurance to lead a party that is capable of winning any election in Ghana.�
Mr Agyepong, who expressed his readiness and willingness to serve the party by putting himself up for election and to work in the interest of the party, was speaking to the Daily Graphic in a interview yesterday.
Grass-roots mobilisation
Mr Agyepong, who was also the 2008 NPP flag bearer contestant, reiterated his commitment to make the grass-roots the vanguard on which the NPP would win any future election, an agenda he sought to achieve by offering an action-oriented leadership that would restore the party as a genuinely united force to ensure that its machinery at the grass-roots level was resourced and well-oiled to prosecute an effective campaign to recapture power in 2016.
Core goals
Mr Agyepong indicated that his core goals of promoting unity and oneness in the party had been greatly received by party executives and supporters across the five regions he had so far toured.
His tour, which began on Thursday, November 7, 2013, took him to the Volta, Eastern, Greater Accra, Western and Central regions.
Mr Agyepong said he was on a �redemption mission� and believed with the right strategy and proper policing, NPP could win the next election and redeem Ghanaians from untoward hardship.
Having sacrificed for �this great tradition since its inception in 1991,� Mr Agyepong said that he would continue to promote the core values of the party and make it visible in all the 10 regions of Ghana.
Mr Agyepong, who is making inroads in his campaign, faces competition from the incumbent General Secretary, Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, Mr Balado Kwaku Manu, Mr Yaw Buabeng Asamoah and Capt Nkrabea Effa Darteh (retd), all of who have made public their intention to contest the position in the March 2013 Congress.
Experiences
At the lead up to the return of constitutional rule in Ghana in 1992, Mr Agyepong became a key member of the Young Executive Forum � a pressure group of young liberals within the NPP. He played a notable role in the Adu Boahene Presidential Campaign as a co-opted member of the publicity committee, where he participated in the party�s political broadcast and adverts on GTV in the run-up to the 1992 campaign for Prof. Adu-Boahene.
After the infamous stolen verdict of 1992, he was made a member of the shadow cabinet committee of Mines, Lands and Natural Resources under the chairmanship of Dr Kwame Donkor Fordjour.
In 1996, as member of the national campaign team under the chairmanship of Alhaji Issaka Inusah, Kwabena Agyepong was charged with the responsibility of educating party officers on the general electoral process, he undertook several training programmes nationwide.
He coordinated the advertising and publicity campaigns in both print and electronic media.
He then went on to serve as one of the two party representatives at the strong room of the Electoral Commission to monitor and ratify election results before official announcement.
Agyepong became the Communications Director of the Akufo-Addo campaign during NPP presidential primaries in 1998 and later played a key role in the National Campaign effort for the successful 2000 elections, and was once again nominated as one of the two party representatives at the EC to monitor election results, a role he played again in 2004.
