The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Finance, James Klutse Avedzi, says he does not agree with the IEA's proposition that there should be a multiparty Parliamentary Bureau to check over spending in the public sector. He believes such an office should be manned by technocrats, and not politicians. Mr Avedzi noted that the issue has been on the drawing board for some time now. Technocrats who are well versed in the subject should be assembled to work in that field. In his contribution, a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Poverty Reduction, Dr. Kojo Appiah Kubi, welcomed the idea that a multiparty bureau be set up to check public expenditure. He said such a body will not only ensure accountability but ultimately promote financial discipline especially within the public purse. Dr Appiah Kubi proposed that people who flout rules regarding expenditure should be punished.
