Nana Ato Dadzie, a Former Chief of Staff, has said there is the need for the country to invest substantially in the establishment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) institutions to support the Oil and Gas sector.
He said it was high time the country looked at other areas of educational training within, rather than sending Ghanaians abroad to be trained as oil and gas experts.
Nana Ato Dadzie who is also a private legal practitioner, was speaking at the 62nd Speech and Prize giving day ceremony of the Sekondi College at Sekondi in the Western Region.
The school celebrated the day under the theme: �Consolidating Discipline and Becoming an Academic Icon -The Collaborative Efforts of Stakeholders.�
Nana Dadzie said the Western Region also had lots of potentials in the areas of Sport and Fishing, and wondered why all those resources had not been tapped for the holistic development of the country in general.
�We need to build a strong human resource base for the country to manage its technological advancement�, he said.
He stated that the Sekondi College with its vast land and other infrastructure could be used as a starting point for ICT education with emphasis on Oil and Gas.
Touching on discipline, the former Chief of Staff stressed the need for schools to strengthen their Counseling services, and entreated parents to set good examples for their children to follow, adding, �Charity begins at Home.�
Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Minister for Energy and Petroleum, urged students to be stars for their families. �Your parents are looking up to you to turn the fortunes of that family around�, he said.
The Minister said Government was committed to providing the needed infrastructure for the socio-economic advancement of the country and added that, �Sekondi College would always have its fair share of this infrastructure�.
Mr. Alfred Ekow Gyan, Deputy Western Regional Minister encouraged the students to eschew insubordination, truancy, drunkenness, smoking, sexual promiscuity, pilfering and other deviant behaviour that could jeopadise their future.
Mr. Joseph Ben Asmah, Headmaster of Sekondi College urged old students to come back and support the development of the school. �I am anticipating the day when facilities on this campus will be embossed with names of year groups�, he added.
Mr. Asmah said the school recorded qualitative passes in all subject areas in the 2013 West African senior school certificate examination (WASSCE).
Master Matthew Adzakey, Head Prefect mentioned inadequate dormitory facility as one of the major challenges confronting students in the school.
