Goldfields Denies Damang Mine Shutdown

Gold Fields states that it has not considered closing down its Damang Mine in Ghana. The story put out on Ghanaweb by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) is factually incorrect. At the release of Gold Fields Q3 Results on 20 November 2013, the companys CEO Nick Holland made the following statement on the status of the Damang Mine: At Damang, the focus remains on improving operational performance through improved quality mining and more consistent plant availability. The work to determine if it is economically viable to extract all or part of the four million ounce reserve continues, with a decision on the future of the mine expected in the first half of 2014. If a viable sustainable operational plan cannot be developed for this mine, care and maintenance will be considered. It will be noted that the above statement was made prior to the 26 November 2013 GNA story and is the correct statement on Gold Fields approach to the future of Damang. A more detailed policy statement will be issued in the first half of next year.
