Doctor Entangled In Alleged Rape

Information available to The Enquirer indicates that a Medical Superintendent of Hawa Memorial Hospital, Dr. Clement Asubonteng, has allegedly raped a pregnant woman (named withheld) in his consulting room when attending to her for medicals. The paper was told that the pregnant woman immediately reported the incident to the hospital management for redress but it was unsuccessful. The papers investigation revealed that the mediation by the management of the hospitals failed woefully when the victims family demanded an amount of GH200,000 as compensation. The paper was told that it was after the doctor refused to pay the said compensation amount and further claimed that the woman wanted to blackmail him that the victim reported the incident to the Osiem police for his arrest. Confirming the incident to The Enquirer, the Eastern Regional Police public relations officer, ASP Nketia Yeboah, said the allegation of rape happened on November, 25, this year at about 5pm. He said it was a problem for the management of the hospital to call for amicable settlement between the two parties without recourse to the law. Mr. Yaboah further stated that the doctor was arrested by the Osiem police in the East Akim Municipality two days later on November 27. He averred that the Police Regional Crime Investigations Department (C.I.D) has taken over the case to unravel the truth in the case. The complainant has not gone for medicals concerning this matter. An adult should report to the hospital immediately after the incident, Mr. Yeboah pointed out. Mr. Yeboah, therefore, called for circumspection the reportage of the case since it is a serious one. When this reporter met with top management of Hawa Memorial Hospital, the General Manager, Mr. Peter Duah confirmed the story and said the victim reported the incident to them. Mr. Duah stated that when they called the doctor for his side of the story he said the victim was just trying to blackmail him for money. He told the paper that they have informed the hospitals management board for the way forward concerning the necessary action to be taken. Mr. Duah also disclosed that the incident has been reported to the East Akim District Health Director and, therefore, waiting for a recommendation from the district as to whether he should be removed. As at the time of filing this report, Dr. Asubonteng was still in police custody.
