The police have arrested a teacher of the Walewale Senior High School in connection with the students� riot in the school last week. The Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, Alhaji Mahama Arhin, who disclosed this to The Ghanaian Times newspaper said the teacher, whose name is being withheld, was in police custody assisting in investigations. He said the teacher was allegedly seen with some of the students, prior to the rioting in the school. Nine students of the Walewale Senior High School are currently on remand in the Tamale prisons, whilst 12 others, believed to be juveniles, are in remand homes for causing unlawful damage to school property and a police vehicle. The students� riot led to the burning of the headmaster�s bungalow and stealing of 70 lap-top computers in the school�s ICT laboratory. A police patrol pick-up was also vandalised while four police personnel got injured during the disturbances. Alhaji Arhin hinted that the Northern Regional Security Council (RESEC) has directed the Regional Directorate of Education to set up a committee to investigate the students� riots at the Walewale SHS. He said the decision was taken at a REGSEC meeting following an allegation by the headmaster, Mr. Sampson Jakpah, that the riot was masterminded by his staff. He said the headmaster accused his assistant headmaster and other members of the staff of instigating the students against him. He explained that the headmaster�s allegation needed to be investigated in order to get to the bottom of the matter. The West Mamprusi District Chief Executive Mr. Adam Yussif indicated that the district security committee was working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible. He said it was important for the issue to be resolved immediately to pave way for the students to return to school. He said police personnel were still present at the school to maintain law and order.
