Farmers Day Holiday: Mockery Of Farmers - CPP

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) in the 2012 general elections, has described as a mockery to farmers, the annual farmers day celebration which is observed as a public holiday. Nana Frimpomaa II, in a statement released to XYZ News said, Farmers day has been wrongly celebrated over the years. She is therefore calling for a total overhaul of the system to give significance to the day. Is it significant to the farmer if all teachers do not go to work in his honour when he cannot afford to pay his childs examination fee? What is significant to farmers when all medical practitioners celebrate them and yet they cannot afford to pay their hospital bills? What is significant to the farmer when all public servants celebrate them and yet cannot afford to educate his or her ward to the tertiary level? She argued: We have gotten it wrong and we therefore need to come again and construct a more appropriate way of celebrating the hard working farmers in the Country. It is a mockery because on Farmers Day the Farmer is on the Farm. According to the Queen mother, we should ask ourselves, how we can improve the lives of our farmers who even on Farmers Day, have been producing to keep us alive over these years. What can we do as citizens to support, when on Farmers Day, farmers cannot afford to take a day off? By asking some of these important questions we will get the right answer to begin something good for the farmer, she put forth. She suggested that Ghanaians dedicate 10% of our time to improve the lives of our farmers, so they can also afford the luxury of enjoying their holiday.
