Govt Arrears To GETfund Will Soon Be Paid - Ayariga

Government has admitted its failure to pay the 2.5 percent VAT returns meant for the daily operations of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund). Minister for Information and Media Relations, Mahama Ayariga has attributed the delay to administrative lapses. He implied, it will be farfetched to say that GETfund is bankrupt; the process of collecting the money and then transferring it to the account of GETfund I believe there are administrative lapses. The Bawku central Member of Parliament however gave the assurance that all the arrears due GETfund will be cleared soon. The pact is also known as 2.5% VAT and so there is no way that the finance ministry will not own up to the GETfund in terms of exactly what they are entitled to; so I believe that these are issues that the Finance Ministry will adequately addressed. He continued saying, If you say that there are shortfalls in the amount being paid I may not be in a position to debate you but it is practically impossible for the GETfund office not to be given anything at all out of what they are entitled to in terms of VAT receipts. The issue about government owing GETfund was brought to the pubic fore by an aspiring NPP national youth organizer, Richard Nyamah. Mr. Nyamah in a statement threatened to sue government for failing to pay the monies owed GETfund since January 2013. He gave government 72 hours within which to credit GETfund accounts with all the accumulated arrears. He has since instructed his lawyer, Thaddeus Sory to proceed to court and take legal action against government. According to Richard Nyamah, GETfund was broke and could no longer perform its constitutionally mandated responsibility in the area of sponsoring educational infrastructure and by extension helping needy but brilliant students.
