NPP Chair Aspirant Alleges Rigging Plan

ONE of the leading Contenders for the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship position of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh, has warned that he would not take kindly to any attempt to rig the impending election of regional executives for the party, especially the chairmanship position. According to the former Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, he had received intelligence about rigging machinery, allegedly being put in place to rig the polls. The former Nsuta-Kwamang MP is contesting the regional chairmanship slot with a Kumasi-based business tycoon and ex-Constituency chairman for the Bosomtwe Atwima, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, as the party seeks to find replacement for Mr. F. F. Antoh. The party is set to hold Regional Congress on January 24 at a venue yet to be decided but reports emerging indicate that the battle for the regional chairmanship slot would be a hard fought one. Already, intense campaign by the two aspirants seeking the position has begun but the former MP is calling for fairness and transparency in the midst of alleged reports that plans were being hatched to manipulate the election in favour of one candidate. Though the former minister, who dropped the hint in an interview on Kessbe FM in Kumasi, refused to give details of the alleged plans, Hon. Osei Prempeh warned that it would not be in the interest, unity and progress of the party. The former MP observed that the last thing the NPP must entertain would be to employ any form of machination that is likely to skew the outcome of the congress in favour of any candidate. Asked if his caution was only a red herring just to secure sympathy from the delegates, Hon. Prempeh said he was very optimistic about his chances of winning but believes in fair and transparency. He said it was necessary for everyone to ensure that the elections were conducted in an open transparency so that both the vanquished and the winner will accept the outcome in good faith. I have contested several elections in my political career and so I am not afraid of any competition, besides I know I am the best candidate for the position, he bragged.
