International Democratic Union (IDU) Commends NPP And Its 2012 Flagbearer

The International Democratic Union(IDU)has held its Executive Committee meeting in Lima-Peru in November 2013. The IDU is a working association of over 80 like-minded political parties of centre and centre right from all continents. The meeting deliberated on local and topical issues around the globe such as; the road to economic success in Peru,the democratic challenge in Latin America,Democracy at Stake in Venezuela,Challenge to Democracy in Bolivia,prospects of Democracy in Central America etc.etc. The meeting commended the NPP and its 2012 flagbearer Nana Akufo Addo for the peaceful and civil manner it conducted itself before and after Ghana�s Supreme Court ruling on 29th August 2013 on the election petition. The behaviour of NPP and Nana Akufo Addo received the wildest applause from the meeting led by its Chairman-Hon John Howard OM AC former Prime Minister of Australia.The IDU believes that electoral disputes can be settled through the courts of law, rather than the use of violence. Hon John Howard praised the NPP for leading the way in deepening multiparty democracy in Africa and setting the example in electoral dispute adjudication for others to emulate. The IDU further called for independence, impartiality, intergrity, transparency, professionalism, ethical and confident Electoral Management Bodies in Africa to increase the prospect of running credible and excellent elections that will be acceptable to all parties. The IDU Executive Comittee also lauded NPP Ghana for recognising the ideals of liberal democracy, freedom of individual and enterprise, and for championing the need for economic growth based on individual initiative, free and competitive economy. The NPP�s support for the poor and vulnerable to be able to stand on their feet was also commended. The meeting urged NPP to share its experience with other centre right political parties in Africa in order to move Africa�s democracy forward; bring peace to the continent instead of wars over election results so as to allow investment and development to flow.
