Cash-Loaded Bullion Van Crashes On Accra-Tema Motorway

Police personnel from Tema last week rescued a cash-loaded bullion van which got involved in an accident on the shoulder of the Accra-Tema Motorway, to prevent it from being looted by residents of the area. The Toyota Hilux bullion van, with registration number GE 3114 X, had two occupants whose names were giver as Emmanuel Sena, a bank clerk and his driver, Raymond Akufo Adangme. The accident occurred as the driver attempted to avoid colliding with an unidentified vehicle that allegedly crossed its lane. Sustaining injuries, both Raymond and Emmanuel were rushed to Tema General Hospital (TGH), where they were hospitalized for treatment. The bullion van, now mangled, was traveling from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in Accra with an unspecified amount of cash to the Mepe Rural Bank in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, when the incident occurred at about 10:30 am on Thursday. Police Highway Patrol team on duty on the Accra-Tema Motorway, arrived at the scene and prevented the cash in the bullion van from being looted. Superintendent Oduro Amaning, the Tema Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, confirmed the accident to Daily Guide, noting that the driver of the bulllion van denied over-speeding. He said that in his attempt to avoid running into an unidentified vehicle that crossed his lane, he quickly swerved but unluckily landed the vehicle into a ditch. According to him, the highway patrol team that rescued the occupants quickly arranged for a towing vehicle to pull the bullion van from the mud and hauled it to the Tema Regional MTTU station for further investigation. He further indicated that another bullion van was immediately sent by the manager of the Mepe Rural Bank to convey the money to the bank. Superintendent Oduro Amaning said the cash in the mangled bullion van, according to the managers of the recipient bank, were intact but two of the patrol team members who rescued the loaded cash van lost their riffles, which were later found stuck in the mud of the ditch. He therefore cautioned motorist against reckless driving, particularly during this time when most of the roads would be slippery due to fog and hence asked drivers to calculate defensive driving habits to make driving on our roads safe before, during and after the Christmas.
