Ghanaian Media Urged To Break Over Concentration On Politics For Real Agenda Setting

The Executive Director of the Centre for Media Analysis, Dr Messan Mawugbe says the media performed creditably last year in disseminating information, citing the Election Petition hearing and GYEEDA scandal among others. He said the media also held officials accountable which led to the recovering of some assets to the State. Speaking to Radio Ghana, Dr Mawugbe noted that the media's over concentration on political issues, less agenda setting and lack of research were some of its low points. On his assessment of the media when practitioners met the President last Tuesday, Dr Mawugbe noted that journalists asked critical questions, but some were not hinged on statistical research, a situation he said made it possible for the President to answer the questions with ease. On his projection for 2014 and beyond, Dr Mawugbe asked media practitioners to increase research, limit concentration on political issues, and set practical agenda for national development. Meanwhile, a Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr Seidu Alidu has applauded the media for asking pertinent questions when practitioners had an encounter with the President. Speaking to Radio Ghana, Dr Alidu indicated that the medias watch dog role can be efficient if more attention is dedicated to developmental issues. He also praised the President for subjecting himself to questions by the media on his stewardship. On the over concentration of the media on political issues, Dr Alidu said development cannot be decoupled from politics. He said politics drives all issues pertaining to decision making and growth. He urged the media however to dedicate some time to other equally important matters to propel the nations aspirations.
