�We don�t have a problem with investigations into these things� We believe that those who sold and those who bought have their PRO and they can speak for themselves. The method they seek to use is what we are cautioning,� said Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, majority chief whip in parliament. This was in response to the Minority�s quest to unravel the mystery surrounding the sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz. The Minority does not agree that there is indeed no need for investigations and insists on conducting their own investigations and make their findings public. This was after the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Doe Adjaho dismissed a motion filed by 80 Minority Members of Parliament which sought to demand a parliamentary inquiry into the sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz. According to Mr Adjaho, the case was already in court and so it will be prejudicial for Parliament to start any investigations. However, the minority was unimpressed and opted to conduct their own �private investigation�. In reaction to this on Citi FM eye witness news, Hon. Muntaka, also Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawaso constituency in the Ashanti Region said the majority sees nothing wrong with the minority�s intention to conduct an investigation but �it is the method they are trying to use.� He reiterated: �We don�t have a problem with whatever the minority wants to do concerning the sale of Merchant Bank...but the challenge is that we are in a democratic dispensation; we have rules that govern whatever we are doing. I sometimes get worried when we keep shifting the goal post and blaming people unnecessarily when the rules of the house is clear.� According to Hon. Murtala, had the speaker �even� accepted the minority�s motion, they as the majority would have voted against it. He said Ghanaians must ask themselves �if truly the minority has no hidden agenda under their sleeves.� �What prevented them from going to court and seeking an injunction? Why is it that they don�t want to use the legal means possible? We cannot be in parliament and allow an apartheid system where the minority will be ruling; we won�t do that. We will never allow them to try to use unconventional measures simply because those conditions are provided� Even if the speaker had allowed the motion to go on, we would have voted against it; not because we do not want the investigations to be carried on - but the method they use is a cruel one and if we are not careful, it will be opened to abuse� we have to discuss it and agree that this is what we want to do,� he indicated.
