Wa East Assembly Members Confirm President Mahamas Nominee For DCE After Initial Rejection

The Presidents nominee for the position of District Chief Executive for the Wa East in the Upper West Region Abdul Karim Abudu has now been confirmed after his initial rejection by members of the Assembly over a week ago. At a special meeting of the assembly at Funsi, the District capital Mr Abudu obtained 26 votes to get the nod out of the 36 votes cast by members present during the session. The nominee an Accountant by profession failed in his first attempt to get the position after falling short of the needed three votes to make two thirds of the endorsement. Radio Ghanas Correspondent William Owusu Boateng reports that ahead of the election, all the eleven government appointees of the assembly were replaced by new ones who were instantly sworn into office by the District Magistrate. The confirmation took place in the midst of heavy security presence as in response to the commotion caused by some residents who agitated for the rejection of the nominee during the previous meeting. The session despite attracting a large number of observers mainly the youth, was conducted in an atmosphere of civility and cordiality as the outcome of the election was greeted with spontaneous jubilation. Addressing the House earlier, the Member of Parliament for the area Ameenu Salifu entreated all interested groups within the assembly to close their rank and work collectively to accelerate the development of the district. The DCE Elect 46 year old Abdul Karim Abudu expressed gratitude to the President and Members of the assembly for the confidence reposed in him. He promised to work in collaboration with all stakeholders in the district so as to find practical solutions to the high level of poverty among the people. The Regional Minister Dr Ephraim Avea Nsoh advised the DCE elect not to engage in personal vendetta and witch hunting of the ten members who voted against his nomination. Dr Nsoh urged the incoming DCE to reciprocate his nomination by working around the clock to turn around the fortunes of the people through effective and far-sighted leadership.
