Ayishetu And Isaac Aborts A Seven (7 ) Months Old Pregnancy

The Techiman Circuit Court has sentenced a 35 year old unemployed, Ayishatu Aremeyaw, and a 21 year old farmer, Isaac Arhin, to five years each in imprisonment with hard labour, for aborting a 7 months old pregnancy. The accused person, Ayishatu Aremeyaw pleaded guilty to all the three counts of Abortion, abetment and child abandonment while Isaac Arhin also pleaded guilty to abetment to commit crime. The court gave five years on each count to be run concurrently. Prosecuting, ASP Edmond Agyemang Badu told the Court, presided over by Justice Michael Ntumi that about a month ago Ayishatu returned from Burkina Faso to Nkoranza in the Brong- Ahafo Region, with her 7 months old pregnancy. According to the Police, Ayishatu became a friend to Isaac Arhin, who is also a native of Nkoranza. He said Arhin gave assurance to Ayishatu that he would help her to abort the pregnancy, since her husband cannot take care of her 2 kids and the pregnancy. ASP Agyemang Badu indicated that true to his promise to commit their wicked agenda on 31st December, 2013, Arhin inserted a concoction into Ayishatus private part. The prosecutor stressed that on 1st January, 2014, about 4 am, the 7 months pregnancy was aborted but the fetus was still alive. Sensing danger, Ayishatu took the fetus and threw it into a nearby gutter, but luck was not on her side, as a Good Samaritan saw her. With the help of others, Ayishatu Aremeyaw was arrested and the fetus was sent to the St Theresas Hospital at Nkoranza to try and save the baby, but the baby could not survive. The accused persons who had prayed to the court to temper justice with mercy since they did not know the repercussion of the act after Isaac Arhin had told the open court that he charged Ayishatu 30 Ghana Cedis of which she paid. But the trial judge, Mr. Ntumi noted that the accused persons actions were reprehensible and, therefore, deserves severe punishment to serve as deterrent to other recalcitrant citizens who may want to emulate same. Justice Ntumi continued that he would not take this case kindly at all adding that it takes only a callous person to terminate seven months pregnancy. Quoting the Bible, he said: blessed are those who are merciful for they shall be obtained mercy. He, however, noted that the convicts did not exhibit mercy to the innocent blood.
