The Tarkwa Nsueam crime division of the Ghana Police Service recorded 2,377 cases last year as against 2,690 cases in 2012. Out of the number, 2,335 were minor offences with 42 serious offences whilst in 2012, 2,625 were minor offences and 65 serious offences. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the divisional crime officer for the municipality, Deputy Superintendent of Police Augustine Anyarah attributed the decrease in crime to the vigorous day and night patrols and snap checks in the municipality. He said the visibility and accessibility policy introduced by the Police Administration where security officers were seen at most intersections and market places contributed to the low crime. DSP Anyarah said although his outfit recorded 15 robbery cases as compared to five in 2012, most of them were gold related and that the increase was due to the closure of illegal mining sites in the municipality. He said to ensure that bad nuts in the society were flushed out the police wouldl step up public education on crime this year and appealed to the people of Tarkwa Nsueam and its environs to assist the police by reporting any suspicious characters they notice in their respective communities.
