Govt To Embark On Street Lighting Project

The Deputy Minister of Energy Mr. John Jinapor, has announced government�s decision to embark on a massive street lighting project across the country. He said the illumination system of the major cities and towns would be significantly improved to promote night life activities and strengthen security. That would also come with the added advantage of helping to entice investors. Mr. Jinapor said the pilot phase of the project had already started in the Tema Metropolis. He was speaking to newsmen after touring a warehouse and plant of the Prefos Company Limited, an electrical engineering company in Kumasi, the contractors awarded the project. The company is currently assembling components of the street bulbs at its Adako-Jachie plant near Ejisu. The Deputy Minister expressed the determination of government to extend electricity to every corner of the country, adding that, the installation of solar street lighting system in some deprived communities was ongoing. Mr. Jinapor said the move to engage local companies on the project was not only to support them to create jobs for the youth but also to ensure that quality raw materials were used in the production of the bulbs to ensure longer lifespan. He praised the management of Prefos for their efficient performance and urged the people to be watchful and report those who steal the street light bulbs. Mr. Seth Adjei Baah, President of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who joined the Deputy Minister on the tour, said every Ghanaian had a part to play in the nation�s development. The private sector needed to be supported to grow to take up major government projects at all levels to help open employment opportunities and transform the lives of the people. Mr. Baah counseled employees of the company to ensure teamwork, dedication and hard work to achieve set targets. Mr. Alexie Kwasi Fosu, Managing Director of the Company, said the company, pledged quality job and to work within given deadlines.
