The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is to set up a technical working committee to help reduce the impact of redundancy exercise in the mining sector. Nii Armah Ashitey, sector Minister, said some mining companies have undertaken redundancy exercises as a result of slump in the gold price on the world market and other factors. Nii Ashitey was speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Accra on Friday to mitigate the effect of the redundancy exercise by mining companies. He said most employers in the mining sector, although were unhappy about the situation, they have resorted to this solution in order to keep their organizations in the centre other than making them fall completely. Mr Kofi Asamoah, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said it is evident that most mining companies have started sharing their losses, and that the time has come for all to take part in addressing the issue of redundancy in the mining sector. He noted that as a country the huge resources are taken from the mining sector and that the issue of unemployment bothers both social and economic sectors. He expressed the hope that government would tackle the issue and find a workable solution to this redundancy problem. Dr Tony Obeng, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber Of Mines, said there was the need for government to collaborate with stakeholders to plan for a long-term sustainable solution.
