Korle Bu Receives Telesimulator

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital was yesterday presented with a simulator valued at $100,000 to help with the training of neurosurgeons in the country. The hospital is the first to have this equipment nationwide. The simulator is a system where tele-simulation takes place. Tele-simulation describes a platform that connects two individuals in real-time for simulation-based training anywhere in the world. Tele-simulation offers a training that eliminates travel, financial and physical barriers that often face specialised medical education programmes or workshops. It also further enhances skill training as simulation-based learning allows a surgeon to learn new skills outside the operating room environment. Speaking at the handing over of the simulator to the hospital, the acting Chief Director, Rev Albert Botchway, stated that the simulator will be used to train Ghanaian neurosurgeons remotely using the internet model. Rev Botchway stated that the project was funded by the Canadian government and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is the first medical facility in the country to benefit from this project. He reiterated that the support the Korle Bu Neuroscience Foundation, Canada, has in the past given to the hospital could not be overlooked. According to him, this support has been made in several donations of equipment and other medical consumables to the hospital, and yesterdays presentation is yet another demonstration of their commitment to the relationship they have with Korle Bu. He was hopeful that participants will put in the needed effort to derive maximum benefit from the training project. This way, we will be able to sharpen our skills to offer the required surgical intervention to our patients, he added.
