National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called for an amendment to the educational calendar to enable Senior High School (SHS) graduates awaiting results to apply for admission to universities.
This is after some public universities revealed they will not admit the 2014 batch of students writing the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The said institutions include the University of Cape Coast (UCC,) the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
According to them, the admission process will end before final year SHS students finish their examinations.
Vice-President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, described the decision of the universities as unwarranted saying, �making students wait at home for a year means that parents are going to spend more money catering for them doing absolutely nothing.�
He opined that the universities should rather suggest ways of solving problems in the education system and not worsen the situation.
Mr. Carbonu pointed out that the calendar of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) is �not in tandem with the calendar of the universities.�
This situation he said should have prompted the various stakeholders to discuss ways of remodeling of their academic calendars to be in sync.
The NAGRAT vice-president further mentioned that the public universities unwilling to admit this year will be at the losing as �the cr�me de la cr�me of products from the Senior High School this year will be taken over by the universities that are ready to adjust and accommodate them.�
