Paul Afoko Donates To Jailed NPP Activists

An aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko on Friday led a 15-member delegation of Central Regional Executives to visit four members of the party who were incarcerated in the Northern Region over violence in the 2008 general elections which resulted in the death of one person. The five inmates include Imoro Gunidaana, Mohammed Habib Dagbani, Shaibu Alhassan, Majeed Alhassan and Yahuuza Yakubu, who was transferred to the Nsawam Prison. The convicts, who were initially sent to the Tamale Prisons, were later transferred to the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison in the Central Region. Mr Afoko, who was on his campaign tour of the region, stated that the visit to the prison was to assure the partys members that the NPP would give them the necessary assistance which would lead to their early release. The aspiring chairman hinted that they would support the legal team handling the case at Kumasi Appeal court, adding that justice delayed is justice denied. Mr Afoko reiterated the commitment of the regional executives to regularly visit the prisoners until the appeal goes through. Please be obedient and abide by all the rules and regulations in the prisons, he added. He was happy that the incarcerated members of the party had called for peace and unity among the rank and file of the party. The aspirant, who urged the supporters to intensify their campaign for peace and unity, indicated that the battle for power would be intense in 2016. The party would only be able to convince the public to vote the party back to power if the current character assassination, factions and in the party is closed, he said. The Central Regional Prisons Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons, Minnah Ahwa-Yankey thanked the team for the visit, adding that the inmates need care, love and prayers instead of stigmatization and rejection. Mohammed Habib Dagbani, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, commended the delegation for the gesture and called on them to help support the legal team handling their case in order to speed up the trial. He said they were innocent of the charges leveled against them which had led to their incarceration five years ago. As the party prepares for its national executive elections, the candidates should let Psalm 133 be their guiding principle in whatever they do, he noted. The delegation donated GH1,000 to cater for the welfare and health needs of the prisoners. Boniface Abubakri Siddique, a former Minister of Works and Housing in the previous NPP administration was part of the delegation.
