Local Government Minister Tour Central Region

Mr Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development on Monday began a three-day official visit to the Central Region. The visit is to acquaint himself with the activities and on-going projects in the various Assemblies and also interact with Assembly Members on policy decisions. The assemblies to be visited are the Gomoa West District, Ekumfi District, Nfantseman Municipal and the Cape Coat Metropolitan Assembly. At Gomoa West, Mr Oppong-Fosu charged the staff to always protect the national interest, adding that, "It is the responsibility of Public Service Officials to protect the national interest." He said the integrity of assemblymen is paramount in the protection of public and national interest and urged them to be honest and promote the development of their various assemblies. Mr Oppong-Fosu congratulated the Gomoa West Assembly for passing the Functional Organizational Assessment Tool test, set up by the Ministry to access the performance of assemblies. Mr Samuel Sarpong, Central Regional Minister, said most of the developmental projects in the region were progressing steadily and within all the various assemblies." He urged the assemblymen to be patriotic and promote the development of their assemblies to raise the living standards of the people. Mr Theophilus Adu-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive, said the assembly is one of the 20 districts in the central region and was established by a legislative instrument (LI1896) in July, 2008. He said this is in line with the enactment of the Local Government Department of District Assemblies Commencement instrument 2009, (L.I 1961) and the transfer of staff to the Local Government Service. He said the Gomoa West Assembly has established the department�s outline in the first and second schedules of the L.I, with the exception of the National Resources and Conservation Department. Mr Adu-Mensah said, the assembly has chalked some achievements, and that, they will not relent on their efforts but will continue to work hard to sustain the success. The two Ministers inspected a collapsed bridge at Agona Swedru in the Agona West District caused by the blasting of rocks by Las Adventuras Limited, a Construction Company working on the Swedru-Akora River dredging project. The entourage also paid a courtesy call on Nana Kwabena Botwe II, Paramount Chief of Agona Swedru, whose residence had also been affected by the rock blast.
