Tema Workers Raise Issues With Some Government Decisions

The Tema District Council of Labour, TDCL, is not happy with some actions taken by government that have caused hardship among workers. In a statement signed by its chairman, Wilson Agana, the TDCL says the utility price hikes, drastic fall of the cedi, freeze on pay increases, sale of Merchant Bank among others give the signal that government is insensitive to the concerns and plight of workers. The statement said these actions have weakened the purchasing power of workers and made life uncomfortable for most workers. It said workers form an integral part of national development. They are therefore calling on the TUC to immediately reconvene a National Tripartite Committee Meeting to address the issue of the national daily minimum wage. The workers also want SSNIT and the Bank of Ghana to clarify speculations about the sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz. The statement said failure to do so, the TDCL will take a decision to fight for their rights at the next meeting to be convened soon.
