The swift response of the police prevented looting of cash on a bullion van that had been involved in a road crash on the Kumasi-Accra highway on Thursday.
The professionalism of the police officer, escorting the van, and the prompt response of his colleagues at a nearby police check point, scared away hundreds of eager-looking residents of Nnadieso, who rushed to the crash scene few minutes after it had happened.
The security officers cordoned off the place to make sure that nobody got closer to the bundles of cedi notes that had been scattered over a wide area.
The crash happened at about 1340 hours on the section of the road between Nnadieso and Breku.
Police Chief Superintendent Alex Amenyo, the Konongo Divisional Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Augustine Mensah, Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) and DSP Samuel Sandow Latebu, Asante-Akim South District Commander, were on hand to make sure nothing went wrong.
Mr Frank Kwabena Karikari, the first person to arrive at the scene, did not only assist remove the crash victims but also offered his car for the cash to be loaded on.
The driver of the van, which was heading for Kumasi, Frank Tievie, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that a Daewoo bus coming from the opposite direction veered off its lane and hit his vehicle.
It somersaulted several times under the impact before it fell on its side.
DSP Mensah would not speculate about the cause but said he could not rule out fatigue on the part of the bus driver.
