The Emefs/Mataheko Police in Tema have apprehended three suspected land guards at Appolonia in the Kpone-Katamanso District of the Greater Accra region after they allegedly burnt the property of a developer and fired shots at the police.
The suspects, Simon Noitey, 54, driver, Emmanuel Noi Amu, 36, carpenter and Abraham Noitey, 30, a security man, reportedly burnt a wooden structure and took away equipment such as GPS machine and tape measures.
The suspects were said to be among 15 suspected land guards who fired at the police. The remaining suspects managed to escape.
Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, the District Police Commander of Dodowa told the media that his outfit last Friday at about 8:30 am received information that a wooden structure on a parcel of land situated at Appolonia had been burnt and that the pillars used for the demarcation of the land had also been destroyed.
According to him, the police, who immediately moved to the scene, heard gunshots.
He added that they found a group of men in a Toyota Pickup with registration number GT 1167-12.
He said police initially attempted to arrest the suspects which led to brawl, adding that the suspects, in the presence of the police, fired a shot, which nearly hit a certain Mr. Adu.
The police chief said the personnel managed to subdue and arrest three suspects while the remaining suspects, including the one who fired the shot, managed to escape.
The arrest of the suspects, according to the police, was commended by some residents who called on them not to relent in their efforts to combat violent crime in the area.
He said the police retrieved pump action guns, the said vehicle and two BB ammunitions from the suspects.
Superintendent Ofori noted that 19 persons had been apprehended by Dodowa Police over land issues in recent times, noting that the police would do everything possible to prevent such operations.
He condemned people who fire shots at the police and warned that the security personnel may employ measures to react appropriately.
The Police Commander cautioned people to shun unlawful activities, noting that they would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute persons.
He said the suspects, during police interrogations, denied the accusations but noted that they would be arraigned before court after police investigations.
