Illegal Miner In Remands For Attempted Rape

A 24-year-old illegal miner, Sumaila Abu, has been remanded into prison custody by the Tarkwa circuit court for attempting to rape Agnes Nyame, a 40-year-old farmer at Wassa Domenase in the Western Region. He pleaded not guilty and will re-appear before the court on March 13. Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Albert Adiita told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that the accused used to engage in illegal mining operations. He said on February 15 the complainant attended a funeral at Domenase, returned late in the night but while going to bed she did not close her door. DSP Adiita said Agnes was asleep in her room with her children and felt that somebody was touching her and when she woke up, she saw the accused sitting on her bed naked. The Prosecutor said the victim shouted and Sumaila got out of the room but Agnes followed up and gave him slaps and he bolted away. DSP Aditta said the accused was later arrested by the youth of Domenase and was taken to the Abusuapayins residence where the complainant identified the accused as the one who sneaked into her room and attempted to rape her.
