CPP Marks 48th Anniversary Of Overthrow Of Nkrumah

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has marked the 48th anniversary of the overthrow of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghanas first President. As a result, a vigil was held last Sunday in Accra which was attended by party elders, executive, members, well wishers and sympathisers. Addressing the gathering, the Chairperson of the party, Ms Samia Yaaba Christine Nkrumah, said so far no achievements of any party could match those of the CPP in the economic development history of Ghana. We will not on this day mourn and shed tears for the overthrow of the selfless CPP government of the First Republic but hold our heads high and shoulders up for the development achievements of the CPP. We weep on this day not for Nkrumah and the CPP but for our motherland Ghana. We weep for the ironic tragedy of 6th March 1957, she emphasised. Achievements of CPP Describing the major achievement of Nkrumahs CPP government, the chairperson said the party resolved to struggle for freedom for the liberation of the resources in Ghana from foreign domination and control. She said the CPP believed that political freedom was the necessary condition for the promotion of the countys prosperity through the development of its productive resources to satisfy its needs and for export. We stated our commitment to the liberation of African resources from external domination and its development for the prosperity of the people of a united Africa. We accepted this as a responsibility of our political freedom and a pre-condition for the economic growth and development of our country, Ms Nkrumah stated. Example from Nkrumah to follow According to the chairperson, the achievement of Ghanas first President towards the development of the nation was enormous, adding that the current political leaders were expected to emulate his steps. On the importation and exportation of products, Ms Nkrumah indicated that the CPP practically laid the foundation for the industrialisation of the country to transform its economy. We are proud of our development achievements that practically laid the foundation for an industrialised Ghana to transform our economy that was defined by the importation of manufactured products and the exportation of primary products, she said. She cited the two cocoa processing factories in Tema and Takoradi and the gold refinery at Tarkwa as examples of the initiatives of the CPP government. That, she said, was to add value to the countrys primary exports, improve terms of trade and increase export revenue to reduce the trade deficits and the depreciation of the currency that underlined the countrys poverty. Ms Nkrumah said under the Ghana Education Trust (GET), the CPP government put up secondary schools and teacher training colleges across the regions of the country. Poly clinics and housing estates with adequate public utilities were built in every major town from Axim to Tumu, including the port city of Tema. she added that a food cannery was built at Nsawam, two sugar factories at Komenda and Asutuare, while a meat processing factory and poultry industry were established in Bolgatanga and at Pomadze respectively. A leather and tanning factory and a glue -manufacturing plant, which were offshoots of the meat processing plant, were also established in Kumasi.
